Whop raises $205M at a $5.1B valuation in Sequoia-led round
What's the deal? Whop, a platform that helps users launch and scale their own online businesses, has raised $205 million in a late-stage round led by Sequoia Capital, with Shopify's venture armDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → also participating. The deal values the company at $5.1 billion.
Why now? Whop says annualized revenue has grown to more than $400 million, up from $60 million at the start of last year. The new valuation is a sharp step-up from the $1.6 billion mark set in February, when Tether made a strategic investment.
What's the endgame? As part of the deal, Sequoia's Doug Leone joins Whop's board. He said the firm backed Whop for its ability to attract a young audience and because it is not a typical player in the current "AI boom."
What could go wrong? The platform earns mainly through transaction fees, and its reported run-rate revenue is company-provided. The valuation is a private-market mark, not a public-market test — leaving open whether growth can sustain it.
The signal: The round sits in the top 3% by size among US education-sector late-VC deals over the trailing 48 months, a sample of 112 rounds. It signals investor appetite for creator-commerce platforms outside the AI thesis, even as the sector produces large financings — Whatnot was reported at an $11.5 billion valuation in 2025, though those businesses are not direct comparables.
