Mach9 raises $34M for AI drafting software after pivot from mapping

What's the deal? Mach9 Robotics has raised a $34 million Series A co-led by First Round Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from PrudenceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and existing backer Quiet Capital. The San Francisco startup builds AI-powered computer-aided design (CAD) software that turns LiDAR scans and imagery into engineering-ready drawings for surveyors and civil engineers.

Why now? The raise follows a pivot. Co-founder and chief executive officer Alex Baikovitz started the company in 2021 to build inspection hardware, but concluded that wasn't the bottleneck. "The real pain was in their workflows," he told TechCrunch, describing how tedious it was for engineers to turn scan data into usable surveys.

So Baikovitz dropped "Robotics" from the name and moved to AI CAD. Mach9 has since signed nearly 100 customers to its private beta, which have used the software on more than 2,500 projects.

What's the endgame? Mach9's Digital Surveyor platform aims to replace legacy drafting work done in software from Autodesk and Bentley SystemsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Baikovitz said manual drafting takes about a week per mile, and that Mach9's in-house AI models — trained to centimetre-level accuracy — make the process 10 times faster. The $34 million round is a sharp step-up from Mach9's $12 million seed in November 2024, when it was still focused on geospatial mapping.

The signal: The round sits in the top 5% of all-time US Series A rounds in its sector, a sizable bet on automating specialised engineering work. Mach9 joins a cluster of startups modernising the planning-to-building pipeline — CivilGrid raised $26 million in August for its "Google Maps for the underground" — though the funding is scattered across different use cases rather than a single established wave.
