About Trimble
What if you could connect a construction site, a farm, or an entire fleet of trucks to the digital world, making them more productive and efficient? That's the problem Trimble has been solving for over four decades. Today, the company is a leader in connecting physical industries to digital technology, but its journey started with a single, revolutionary idea: commercializing GPS. In 1978, Charlie Trimble and two of his colleagues from Hewlett-Packard founded Trimble Navigation. They started by acquiring a navigation technology and soon pivoted to the nascent Global Positioning System. This bet on GPS paid off. By the early 1990s, after a 1990 IPO, the company was a key supplier of GPS devices to the U.S. military. However, Trimble’s vision extended far beyond a single device. The company began a decades-long strategy of growth through acquisition, entering new industries by buying companies with deep expertise. A pivotal moment came in 2002 with a joint venture with Caterpillar to integrate automated grade control into heavy machinery, transforming construction workflows. This move established a playbook: find an industry and embed technology to solve its biggest challenges. Another landmark acquisition was SketchUp from Google in 2012, which brought a massively popular 3D modeling tool into Trimble’s portfolio, bridging the gap between design and construction. These strategic acquisitions, along with many others in agriculture and transportation, have built a comprehensive ecosystem of hardware and software. Today, Trimble is focused on its "Connect and Scale" strategy, transitioning from selling standalone products to offering integrated, subscription-based software and services. This shift has resulted in over $1.4 billion in recurring revenue, as the company creates a unified platform for industries like architecture, engineering, construction, and transportation. By connecting an entire project lifecycle—from design to operation—Trimble continues to transform how the world’s essential work gets done.
