Belgium's Rosseel buys steelmaker Aleja in sector consolidation push
What's the deal? Belgian steel distributor NV Rosseel has acquired the business operations of NV Aleja in Welle-Denderleeuw, effective October 1, 2026. The deal, for an undisclosed sum, transfers ownership from Marc De Winter and his family to Rosseel, which is headquartered in Tielt.
What's the endgame? Rosseel is buying capabilities, not just scale. Aleja, founded in 1960, specialises in cutting, bending, and welding reinforcement steel, builder steel nets, and steel beams for Belgium's construction and metalworking sectors.
"What makes Aleja interesting for us is that it is not simply more of the same," said managing director Johan Rosseel. "Aleja is strong in steel beams and reinforcing steel and brings production capabilities that we do not currently have in the same form."
What changes? Not much at first. Operations at the Aleja facility will stay unchanged, and the existing workforce will continue at the same location. Aleja's customers gain access to Rosseel's inventory and processing services at its Tielt and Ruddervoorde sites.
Aleja runs a modern machine park with three overhead cranes and a column-mounted slewing crane, plus recently upgraded sawing, drilling, and rebar cutting and bending lines.
Why now? It is Rosseel's latest expansion since it entered Tielt and Ruddervoorde in 2021 by absorbing Metaalhandel Hemeryck-Heindryckx. The move adds production infrastructure the company has been steadily building since.
The signal: The deal fits a broader pattern of consolidation among independent regional steel distributors across Europe. Facing weak local manufacturing demand and volatile input costs, smaller players are combining operations to stay competitive.
