Courtois and entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila backed the company through their investment group NXTPLAYDealroom has a profile for this one. The deal values Fusion at roughly US$19.5M. A Danish registry filing shows the company raised about US$469.3K (≈$480,000) in late September, though the subscriber is unidentified and neither Fusion nor NXTPLAY has confirmed it is the NXTPLAY investment.

Why now? The backing lands eight weeks after Astralis flagged concerns in its audited accounts about its reliance on new capital. The Fusion deal is NXTPLAY's first move into esports, adding Astralis to a portfolio that already includes football clubs Le Mans FCDealroom has a profile for this one. The numbers: Astralis CS ApS, the subsidiary running the team, reported a net loss of US$2.8M for 2025, negative equity of US$572K, and a year-end cash balance of US$14.3K. Auditors from BDODealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → flagged significant doubt over the company's ability to continue operating without more funding. Average full-time staff fell from 18 to 11.

Management said it drew liquidity from Denmark's state-owned Export and Investment Fund (EIFO) in April 2026 and expected further capital in the third quarter. Negotiations were still ongoing when the report was finalised on August 1.

What's the endgame? Fusion builds and invests in esports, creators, and media, and says it wants to grow beyond a traditional esports organisation into a wider business spanning sport, entertainment, and culture. Courtois, a co-founder and partner at NXTPLAY, said he likes "where the group is heading and the ambition to build something bigger around esports."

Chief executive officer Jonas Gundersen called the investment a "milestone moment" for the organisation.

What could go wrong? The announcement did not disclose the size or terms, so it is not yet clear how much fresh capital Courtois brings. Its significance depends on whether Fusion can stabilise Astralis's finances. The accounts also noted bookkeeping and incorrect VAT return issues, which the company says have been fixed; BDO warned management could face liability for the filings.

The signal: The deal reflects a wider trend of athletes moving past endorsements into ownership and investment. For a long-running esports brand under financial strain, a high-profile sports investor adds visibility — but the test is whether that translates into durable backing.
