China's Yuanli Energy raises $100M+ B round for virtual power plants

What's the deal? Hefei Yuanli Zhonghe Energy TechnologyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Chinese virtual power plant operator known as Yuanli Energy, has raised a B round of several hundred million yuan, equivalent to more than $100 million. Backers include Hefei Renchuang Phase IV Venture Investment Partnership and Hefei Renxin Venture Investment Partnership.

What's the endgame? Founded in 2021, Yuanli Energy runs an AI-driven platform that aggregates and dispatches energy across electricity, heating, cooling, gas, and water. The new funds will go toward product and energy vertical model development, regional expansion, and investment in some energy assets.

Why now? China is pushing virtual power plants from pilots into market operation. The National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration have set a target of more than 20 million kilowatts of adjustable capacity nationwide by 2027, rising above 50 million kilowatts by 2030.

The round marks a clear step up from the company's A round in 2023, which raised several tens of millions of yuan.

What could go wrong? As the opportunity grows, so does the number of operators. The business model still depends on whether firms can reliably aggregate resources and convert them into revenue from electricity markets and demand response.

The signal: The round's significance lies less in its size than in whether Yuanli Energy can turn software and AI capabilities into sustainable operations and asset returns. For now, the investors and amount come mainly from the company's own disclosure, with no independent operating data to verify progress.
