Accel to lead $60M round for DeepMind alum's post-LLM startup

What's the deal? Accel is set to lead a $60 million round for Revolution LabsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a startup founded by former DeepMind researcher Nando de Freitas, with Google Ventures and New Enterprise Associates also said to have joined. The company is built around diffusion models as an alternative to the transformer architecture behind today's large language models, extending the approach from images and audio into text generation.

Who's behind it? De Freitas spent about a decade at DeepMind before a stint at Microsoft. He is part of a widening cohort of Google DeepMind alumni raising large rounds for bets beyond large language models.

Why now? Former DeepMind scientist Janusz Marecki, now an AI partner at Ahren Innovation CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, pointed to the pressure driving the exodus. "There's a top-down pressure to drop everything you're working on and focus on large language models. Then you just leave, there's no point," he said.

He also flagged the shift in pricing: "Valuations used to be 10 times revenue. Now it's 200 times, 300 times."

The bigger picture: Google and DeepMind have produced more than 40 founders of so-called "neolabs," more than OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta. David Silver's Ineffable Intelligence has raised roughly $1 billion, while Jack Parker-Holder's Emulate is in talks to raise $700 million.

The counterview: Demis Hassabis, who in August moved to Alphabet's chief scientist role, pushed back on the framing. "There's a lot of talent movement between all the leading labs and we win our fair share of the top talent," he said. "We have by far the biggest and broadest research bench of any of the labs out there."

The signal: A $60 million round led by Accel for a diffusion-model startup is an early test of whether post-transformer architectures can attract growth capital, not just seed checks. If any of these alumni bets scale, DeepMind's fiercest rival may be its own former talent.
