NL-IX buys Sweden's STHIX from Glesys in Nordic expansion push

What's the deal? European internet exchange operator NL-IXDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired Stockholm Internet eXchange (STHIX)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → from GlesysDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Nordic Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider. The transaction gives NL-IX a foothold in the Swedish internet exchange market. Financial terms were not disclosed.

What each side brings: STHIXDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, founded in 2006, has built a reputation for neutral, high-quality internet exchange services in Sweden. Glesys, which bought STHIX in 2020, will stay on as a customer and infrastructure partner.

What's the endgame? NL-IX will make the STHIX network available to its existing customers, while STHIX clients gain access to a broader range of interconnection and connectivity services. The company's first priority is operational stability and continuity for STHIX customers.

Why now? The deal targets rising demand for low-latency connectivity, cloud access, content delivery, and secure digital infrastructure across the Nordics and wider Europe. It expands NL-IX's presence in northern Europe.

What the executives say: "This acquisition strengthens our position as a leading European interconnection platform, while retaining the local expertise and customer focus that contributed to STHIX's success," said Jan Hoogenboom, chief executive officer of NL-IX. Glesys chief executive officer Glenn Johansson said the firm had "found a company that shares our commitment to neutrality, technical quality, and customer service."

The signal: Internet exchanges — the neutral hubs where networks swap traffic — are consolidating as operators chase regional scale. NL-IX's move follows a pattern of larger players absorbing local exchanges to build pan-European reach while keeping established local ecosystems intact.
