The company, cofounded by German entrepreneurs Maex Ament, Henrik Gebbing, and Philip Stanislaus, declined to disclose its valuation.

Why now? Payments between businesses run to roughly $98 trillion a year, according to Fortune Business InsightsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, but manual approvals slow them down. Nearly half of accounts payable executives cite slow invoice approvals as their biggest challenge, with processing taking more than eight days on average, a 2025 Ardent PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. What's the endgame? Causa Prima positions AI agents on both sides of a transaction — one company's accounts payable, the other's accounts receivable — to negotiate payment terms directly. It earns a cut each time its agents successfully negotiate early payments. "What we need is a network of agents," Ament told FortuneDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

Where's it going? The startup has 25 employees across offices in Madrid and Munich and plans to use the funding to open a New York office as it enters the US market. It previously raised $10 million in a pre-seed round, bringing total funding to $30 million.

Between the lines: The round stands out in its home market. Among 155 comparable seed rounds for German fintech startups over the trailing 48 months, Causa Prima's $20 million sits in the top 1% by size.

The signal: Most automation spending assumes the bottleneck lives inside a single company; Causa Prima is betting it sits in the handoff between them. "Causa Prima is building for the handoff between companies," Base10 general partner Rexhi Dollaku said. As AI agents move from working within firms to negotiating across them, business payments are an early test of whether that vision holds.
