Catalyst raises $30M seed to put AI trading agents in retail investors' hands
What's the deal? Catalyst, a startup building AI trading agents for retail investors, has raised a $30 million seed round led by Sequoia. Jump TradingDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, PeakXV, Lux Capital, AntiFund, Coinbase, and Premji Invest also joined.
What's the endgame? The company's agents turn natural language into trading strategy and then execute it, with a human required to approve each move. The goal, cofounder Dylan Iskandar said, "is that people will simply state an intent, and we have our agents to figure out everything end to end."
Why now? Cofounders Justin Zheng, 25, and Iskandar, 21, started Catalyst in 2025 to simplify an increasingly complex financial world. "There's been this explosion of new financial assets in recent years, but it's too complex for any single human to comprehend the optimal path," Zheng said.
What's the traction? Catalyst has run a pilot that it says generated hundreds of millions in trading volume over a couple of weeks, focused on power traders. The company is now letting users off its waitlist, with wider availability expected later.
What could go wrong? The platform launches amid the rise of prediction markets and the normalisation of crypto, raising questions about misuse. "We're not here to build a casino," Zheng said. "We're not here to build a gambling app."
The signal: Catalyst is betting that AI can move everyday traders up the sophistication curve once reserved for professionals. As Sequoia partner George Robson put it, the agents are "a suit of armor as you navigate the financial world."
