Seraphim backs GPS rival Xona with $15M as valuation jumps to $768M

What's the deal? Seraphim SpaceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Investment Trust has invested $15 million in Xona Space Systems, a California startup building the world's first commercial GPS constellation in low-earth orbit. The cheque formed part of Xona's $170 million Series C round, which valued the company at $768 million.

What's the endgame? Xona is building a commercial upgrade to GPS. Its technology enables centimetre-level positioning accuracy — roughly 50-100 times better than traditional GPS — through a software upgrade to existing devices.

Why now? Satellite navigation already underpins trillions of dollars of global economic activity across transport, telecoms, and supply chains. Xona pitches its constellation as a resilience layer against GPS infrastructure that is currently run by nation states, raising its importance for national security and defence.

What's the upside for Seraphim? The financing lifted the fair value of Seraphim's existing Xona holding by about £52.2 million, or 22.0p per ordinary share. That makes Xona its second-largest holding, with the combined position — including the new $15 million — now worth $121.5 million, up from £28.4 million at the end of March.

Seraphim drew the $15 million from the £137 million it raised in a May C-share issue. This is the fourth deployment of that money; in August it put $55 million into existing holdings Hubble Network, Pixxel, and Zeno Power.

What they're saying: "Xona is addressing a fundamental challenge: the world is becoming increasingly dependent on satellite navigation, but existing infrastructure cannot provide the accuracy, resilience and security that next-generation applications require," said James Bruegger, chief investment officer of Seraphim Space ManagerDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: Expectations for the space sector have risen sharply, and Seraphim's position lets it back companies through successive rounds. The test now, as QuotedDataDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → analyst David Batchelor put it, will be "to translate technological progress and fundraising success into sustainable commercial growth."
