Headline closes $400M fund for European seed and Series A startups
What's the deal? Global venture firm Headline has closed Headline EU VIII, US$258.8M fund backing seed and Series A startups across Europe. It is the firm's eighth early-stage fund dedicated to European founders, with a focus on AI.
Who's behind it? Headline has operated for more than two decades and manages over $5 billion, with investors and operators across Berlin, Hamburg, Luxembourg, Paris, London, San Francisco, São Paulo, Taipei, and Tokyo.
The track record: Its European portfolio includes Mistral, Black Forest Labs, Attio, Bioptimus, Farfetch, and Raisin. Headline first backed Mistral at seed in 2023, weeks after the company was founded, and has invested in every round since.
Why now? "The next generation of great AI companies is being founded in Europe right now, and we want to be their first call," said partner Jon Userovici. Through its Global Growth Fund, the firm can also lead later rounds of $100 million or more.
What's the endgame? Headline positions itself as more than a check-writer, helping companies such as Farfetch, NGINX, and Semrush expand to the US — from setting up a first entity to preparing for a cross-border listing.
Mistral chief executive officer Arthur Mensch credited the firm with "playing a key role in Mistral'US$304.3M Series A — the largest Series A ever raised in Europe."
The signal: With EU VIII, Headline is doubling down on Europe's AI ecosystem at the earliest stages. "The founders we meet today assume global scale from the first conversation," said partner Christian Miele — a bet that the continent's next breakout companies are already being built.
