High performance load balancer, web server, and reverse proxy MoreLess
Nginx, Inc. was the company behind the popular open-source web server of the same name. The company was established to provide commercial products and support for the Nginx software. Its business centered on a dual-license model, offering the free Nginx Open Source version alongside a commercial enterprise-grade product known as Nginx Plus. Revenue was primarily generated through subscriptions to Nginx Plus, which included advanced features, professional support, and regular updates. The company's offerings were designed to improve the performance, reliability, and security of web applications and services. Key products included the Nginx web server, which also functions as a reverse proxy, load balancer, and HTTP cache, and Nginx Plus, which extends the open-source version with features like advanced load balancing, session persistence, and live activity monitoring. Nginx's target market consisted of developers, system administrators, and organizations managing high-traffic websites and complex web applications.
The journey of Nginx began in 2002 when Russian software engineer Igor Sysoev started its development as a personal project. Sysoev was working as a system administrator for Rambler, a major Russian internet portal, and created Nginx to solve the C10k problem—handling ten thousand concurrent client connections on a single server. The first public release of the open-source software occurred in October 2004. For years, Sysoev was the sole developer, a testament to his deep technical expertise. In 2011, recognizing the software's growing global adoption and the need for commercial support, Sysoev co-founded Nginx, Inc. with Maxim Konovalov. The company secured its first major funding round of $3 million that same year to build out its commercial offerings. A significant milestone was reached in 2019 when F5 Networks, a prominent player in application delivery networking, acquired Nginx, Inc. for approximately $670 million. This acquisition integrated Nginx's software capabilities into F5's broader portfolio of application services.
Igor Sysoev, the original creator, served as the company's Chief Technology Officer. His background as a systems administrator directly influenced the design of Nginx, focusing on high performance, stability, and low resource consumption. Co-founder Maxim Konovalov took on the role of CEO, leading the business and commercialization strategy. Following the acquisition by F5, both founders eventually departed from the company and F5.
