What's the endgame? Proceeds will fund clinical evaluation of PheCheck, a home test for phenylalanine (Phe) levels in blood. It targets people with phenylketonuria (PKU), an inherited disorder in which uncontrolled Phe can cause serious lifelong health problems.
How it works: PheCheck pairs DNA aptamer-based sensing with a reusable handheld reader, a single-use cartridge, and a smartphone app. The system tracks Phe over time and can share data securely with care teams.
Why now? PheCheck has won Breakthrough Device Designation from the US Food and Drug Administration. Aptatek expects to finish its ongoing clinical study before year-end and use the data for a planned FDA submission.
"People living with PKU manage phenylalanine levels throughout their lives, yet today's testing process can involve lengthy delays in receiving results," said chief executive officer Michael Boyce-Jacino.
What's next? Investors framed PKU as a first step. "PheCheck provides a focused first application in PKU while establishing the device, assay and connected-data infrastructure to support additional applications over time," said Jason Smith, managing partner of Longview Innovation.
What could go wrong? PheCheck remains investigational and has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Any regulatory delay or study setback would push back a launch.
The signal: The round reflects investor appetite for decentralised diagnostics that move biomarker testing out of labs and into patients' homes. If PheCheck clears regulators, it positions Aptatek to extend its HomeCheck platform to other chronic conditions.
