What's the endgame? Caterpillar cast the move as a way to smooth a change in ownership while keeping the local service and support customers rely on. "We look forward to continuing to work with the Fabick team to build on a century of success," said chief executive officer Joe Creed.
Why now? Fabick framed the sale as a generational handoff. "We're incredibly proud of our team and the customer relationships we've built over the past 100 years," said Jeré Fabick, chairman, CEO, and dealer principal.
Chief operating officer Todd Stanley said the tie-up would boost the dealer's ability to offer "unmatched services, technology and expertise."
What could go wrong? The agreement requires regulatory approval and is subject to customary closing conditions.
The signal: Caterpillar's independent dealer network is one of the largest in the world, and it rarely absorbs a dealer directly. Bringing a long-standing partner in-house signals a willingness to take tighter control of the customer relationship when ownership is in flux.
