DriveSimple lands £1.5m seed to scale flexible van subscriptions

What's the deal? UK startup DriveSimpleDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised £1.5 million in seed funding to expand its flexible van subscription model. Calm Media Investments led the round, with existing shareholders also participating. The new capital brings DriveSimple's total raised to £4.5 million.

What's the endgame? DriveSimple offers new vans to tradespeople, delivery operators, and SMEs on a subscription that sits between traditional leasing and outright ownership. Customers commit for a minimum of six months with a three-month break clause, letting them adjust as workloads change. All-inclusive pricing covers servicing and maintenance, and vans can be delivered within five days.

Why now? The startup is targeting the UK's roughly £4 billion van leasing market, where four-year leases can lock operators into a fixed vehicle and monthly cost. It currently runs a fleet of about 500 vehicles and plans to use the funds to grow inventory, add electric vehicles, and improve its technology platform.

The tech: Central to the model is a proprietary AI-powered vetting and underwriting engine that speeds up credit decisions in a market still reliant on manual assessment. The system lets DriveSimple approve customers faster and consider those who might be declined or delayed by traditional lessors. Customer data is anonymised, with privacy and security built into the platform.

The hire: Alongside the raise, DriveSimple appointed Andrea Romano as chief executive officer to lead its UK expansion. "Our technology is not simply there to make an existing process slightly more efficient. It changes the economics of the model," Romano said.

The signal: At £1.5 million, the round sits toward the smaller end of seed deals, but it reflects investor appetite for flexible, software-driven alternatives to the rigid leasing contracts that have long defined commercial vehicle finance.
