Phocea DC raises €120M to build urban edge data centers in Marseille

What's the deal? Marseille-based Phocea DCDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised €120 million to build a network of small, city-integrated edge data centers, in a round led by pan-European infrastructure fund MargueriteDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The plan, which combines the investment with bank financing, follows an initial €5 million round in 2023.

What's the endgame? Phocea DC will develop four sites in Marseille over the next five years, with a combined capacity of 10 to 12MW — four 3MW facilities rather than a single large campus. The second site is already under development; other locations are still being secured.

Why edge? Instead of competing with hyperscalers, the company builds smaller facilities located closer to demand and designed to fit their urban surroundings, including recovering and reusing waste heat. "€120 million is not about going into hyperscale," said founder and chief executive officer Damien Desanti. "It is about financing 12 megawatts. That means four 3 MW data centers."

How it works: The model favours refurbishing existing buildings over building on undeveloped land, and selecting sites where waste heat can serve a nearby user. "An Edge data center is about several things, primarily integration in terms of acoustics, the redevelopment of abandoned land and waste heat recovery," Desanti said. A site near an industrial area, swimming pool, or school offers outlets for that heat; a residential neighbourhood does not.

Why now? The data center market is racing to expand capacity, driven by surging AI demand. Alongside hyperscale projects of several hundred megawatts, Phocea DC is betting on a smaller, urban-integrated alternative.

The signal: The raise ranks among the largest early-stage venture rounds for a French hosting company in the past four years, placing it in the top percentile of 69 comparable deals. That scale of backing for an edge-focused, ESG-oriented model — Marguerite incorporates such criteria into its strategy — suggests investors see room beyond the hyperscale race for resource-efficient infrastructure built into cities.
