The Japanese startup is building JPY DeFi, a protocol that lets users borrow JPYdf — a crypto-backed stablecoin designed to track the yen — against crypto assets and other stablecoins.

What's the endgame? Most DeFi stablecoins are dollar-denominated, forcing yen-based users to shoulder both crypto and exchange-rate risk. DeltaForesight wants to generate JPYdf liquidity from non-yen assets, connecting global on-chain liquidity to yen-denominated borrowing and trading.

The aim is a yen-based economy on-chain that is not capped by how much yen a single issuer holds in reserve. JPYdf is over-collateralised and issued via smart contract; positions can be liquidated if collateral falls below set thresholds.

Why now? The company is publishing details of the in-development protocol ahead of a mainnet launch. Features, terms, and timing will be announced later.

What could go wrong? DeltaForesight is explicit that JPYdf carries risk: value tracking, price stability, and yen redemption are goals, not guarantees, and the token does not represent a yen-denominated claim under Japanese payment law. Crypto collateral is volatile, which is why the protocol requires over-collateralisation and pre-set liquidation rules.

The funds will go toward protocol development, external security audits, monitoring systems, specialist hiring, and partnerships.

The signal: Efforts to bring the yen on-chain have so far struggled, with fiat-backed stablecoins limited by issuance caps, know-your-customer requirements, and zero yield. "DeltaForesight is taking a completely different approach," said Coral Capital founding partner and chief executive officer James Riney, pointing to its plan to generate yen liquidity from global crypto collateral. As Japan weighs the yen's international standing, investors are betting demand for a yen option extends beyond its borders.
