Zoom buys AI search startup Onyx to win data-sovereignty customers

What's the deal? Zoom has acquired Onyx, an enterprise AI search startup, for an undisclosed sum. The news came this week via LinkedIn posts from Zoom and Onyx's co-founders, Chris Weaver and Yuhong Sun.

Who is Onyx? Weaver started the 18-person company in 2023 and raised US$6.47M seed round co-led by Khosla Ventures and First Round Capital in 2025. Its software connects to more than 50 workplace apps, including Slack, Confluence, and Google Drive. Weaver says Onyx handles over 1 million queries per week and counts NASA, Ramp, and UC San Diego among its customers.

Why does Zoom want it? The draw is where Onyx runs: customers can host the whole system on their own infrastructure, keeping confidential documents in-house. Zoom says the team will "supercharge our AI capabilities — especially for customers who require on-premises deployment and strict data sovereignty standards." Onyx joins Zoom AI Services, its developer platform.

Why now? Zoom has been shopping, making three acquisitions in the past year against two in the previous 15. In June, it launched UK data hosting for its contact centre and AI tools, plus Zoom AI On-Prem for regulated industries. IBMDealroom has a profile for this one. The team stays intact. Weaver, who founded Onyx, says the product will remain "open source, model agnostic, app agnostic, and self-hostable," while Sun adds that customers "will continue to receive the same product by the same team."

What could go wrong? Analyst Tim Banting is reserving judgement. "Most buying companies pull new software into their own cloud inside a couple of years," he wrote. "Zoom making a different promise publicly, on day one, is either a firm pledge or an idea that quietly fades away later." He also doubts demand from companies already paying for Microsoft Copilot or Google Gemini to search the same files.

The signal: Rivals are chasing the same market — Zendesk bought enterprise search platform Unleash last December. As regulated industries push AI without handing data to third-party clouds, self-hosting is becoming a competitive edge, and Zoom is betting Onyx can supply it.
