About IBM

International Business Machines, or IBM, is a company that has, for over a century, provided the technological backbone for global business and society. It’s a story of constant reinvention, moving from mechanical tabulators to mainframe computers, and now to the frontiers of artificial intelligence and hybrid cloud computing. The company's origins trace back to 1911, when financier Charles Ranlett Flint orchestrated a merger of several companies that made time clocks, scales, and punch-card tabulating machines. The new entity was called the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR). In 1914, Thomas J. Watson Sr. was brought on to lead the firm. He instilled a powerful sales culture and a grand global vision, renaming the company International Business Machines in 1924. Under Watson, IBM dominated the market for punch-card data processing. A pivotal moment came in 1964 with the launch of the System/360, a family of mainframe computers that revolutionized business and government operations by creating a compatible architecture across different models. This cemented IBM's status as a tech giant, a position it solidified by helping NASA land on the moon in 1969 and introducing the UPC barcode in 1973. The 1980s brought the IBM PC, which brought computing into offices and homes, but IBM’s decision to outsource the operating system to a small company called Microsoft proved to be a historic misstep. By the early 1990s, IBM was facing massive losses. The board hired Lou Gerstner, who famously refused to break up the company, instead pivoting from hardware to integrated IT services and "e-business". This shift set the stage for modern IBM. The company sold its PC division to Lenovo in 2005 to focus on enterprise solutions. Today, under CEO Arvind Krishna, IBM is focused on the high-margin opportunities of hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence. Major moves like the $34 billion acquisition of open-source software company Red Hat in 2019 and the 2021 spin-off of its managed infrastructure business, now Kyndryl, have sharpened this focus. IBM continues to push into the future with its AI and data platform, watsonx, and investments in quantum computing.
