VIG buys 25% of Dolphin Technologies to expand CEE telematics
What's the deal? Vienna Insurance Group (VIG)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an Austria-based insurer operating across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), has acquired a 25% stake in Dolphin Technologies, a Vienna-based telematics company. Terms were not disclosed. The transaction still requires approval from the Federal Competition Authority.
What each side does: VIG is one of CEE's largest insurance groups, running a decentralised model across the region. Founded in Vienna in 2001, Dolphin develops AI-powered telematics platforms and digital mobility services for insurance and automotive clients.
Why now? The stake deepens a partnership the two firms established in 2022. Dolphin's telematics is already used by seven VIG companies, including KooperativaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in Czechia and Slovakia, CompensaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in Poland and Lithuania, Union in Hungary, OmniasigDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in Romania, and Ray SigortaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in Türkiye.
What's the endgame? VIG wants to broaden its lead in CEE telematics. Dolphin's software integrates into existing customer apps and adapts to local products and regulations, offering drivers behaviour insights, safety tips, emergency functions, and cashback for responsible driving.
Gábor Lehel, VIG's chief innovation officer, said the choice rested on more than mature technology. "It is also the high level of flexibility and the consideration given to the individual requirements of the countries and our companies that have prompted us to take this stake," he said.
The signal: Insurance telematics is shifting from simple data collection toward prevention, risk management, and customer service. By tapping Dolphin's machine learning and predictive analytics, VIG aims to refine risk models and roll out digital services in more markets. "This investment is a strong sign of confidence in us and the logical next step in a partnership that has already proven its worth in seven markets," said Harald Trautsch, Dolphin's founder and CEO.
