EIB bets €40M on Finnish nuclear startup in its first small modular reactor deal
What's the deal? The European Investment Bank (EIB) is investing up to €40 million in Finnish nuclear-technology company Steady Energy, marking its first-ever investment in small modular reactor (SMR) technology. The financing comes as a senior unsecured convertible loan, part of a broader package involving institutional, strategic, and retail investors.
What's the endgame? Steady Energy is developing a 50 MW heat-only reactor designed to supply low-carbon heat to district heating networks as an alternative to fossil fuels. Unlike conventional plants that convert reactor heat into electricity, its lower-pressure design produces heat directly — allowing it to use a much larger share of thermal output.
Where the money goes: The funds will support research and development, testing, and licensing in Finland between 2026 and 2028, paving the way for the company's first commercial deployment. Steady Energy, spun out from the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTTDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in 2023, is building a non-nuclear pilot facility in Helsinki to test safety systems.
Why now? The deal supports the European Commission's strategy to bring Europe's first SMRs and Advanced Modular Reactors online by the early 2030s. The financing is also backed by the InvestEUDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → programme.
Why it matters: "Over 40 percent of final energy demand is heat. Most of the heat we consume comes from fossil fuels," said Steady Energy chief executive officer Tommi Nyman. "With Steady Energy's solution, we can wean ourselves further away from imported fuels."
What's next: 3North Partners PlcDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Finnish public limited company, and Steady Energy have announced a contemplated combination and listing on Nasdaq First North Growth Market Finland. The convertible structure gives the EIB the option to convert its investment into listed shares.
The signal: The round ranks among the largest convertible deals for deep-tech companies in Finland, sitting in the 96th percentile of 468 comparable rounds all-time. As EIB Group Vice-President Karl Nehammer put it, the bank is "actively looking to support Europe's most promising SMR pioneers" — a bet that nuclear heat can play a role in Europe's energy mix alongside renewables.
