What's the endgame? TAR designs modular systems — combining solar, batteries and backup natural gas generators — that can run a data center without ever connecting to the grid. It leans on automation and robots to compress deployment, which co-founder Pat Becker says can happen “in a matter of months.” Gas is reserved for backup or emergencies, with renewables and batteries carrying the bulk of the load. The fresh capital will go toward hiring engineers and expanding manufacturing.
Why now? The scale of AI compute is straining power supplies, and grid connections have become a bottleneck for new data centers — developers face labor shortages, local opposition and long interconnection queues. Off-grid systems offer a way to add capacity without waiting on utilities. TAR is already building a several-hundred-megawatt project for an undisclosed data-center customer in Texas, with another large development planned next year.
The signal: Spark Capital's backing — the firm also invested in Anthropic — and a roughly $1 billion valuation on a Series A point to a bet that powering AI is becoming as central to the sector as the models themselves.
