HyImpulse raises €50M to scale hybrid-propulsion launch services

What's the deal? German spacetech HyImpulse Technologies has raised more than €50 million ($57.9 million) in a Series A extension to advance its suborbital and orbital launch systems. What's the endgame? HyImpulse develops launch services built on proprietary hybrid propulsion technology, combining paraffin-based fuel with liquid oxygen. The design uses fewer components and lower system complexity than conventional liquid-fuel propulsion.

The company operates the SR75, a suborbital vehicle for research, testing, and defence. After its first flight campaign at the Koonibba Test Range in South Australia in 2024, HyImpulse is preparing a second SR75 launch from SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland by the end of 2026.

It is also building the SL1 orbital launch vehicle for dedicated and responsive satellite launches, and targeting in-space mobility, hypersonic testing, and threat simulation.

Where the money goes: The capital will fund development and commercialisation of HyImpulse's launch services, including the next SR75 mission and the SL1's maiden flight. The company plans to expand production capacity and commercial operations in Europe and beyond.

Why now? Chief executive officer and co-founder Christian Schmierer said demand for launch capability is rising across commercial, institutional, and defence markets, alongside Europe's push for independent access to space.

The signal: "Europe needs sovereign, responsive and economically sustainable launch capabilities," Schmierer said. With DLR among its backers, HyImpulse's raise reflects Europe's growing appetite to fund homegrown alternatives in a launch market long dominated by a handful of players.
