elleThermo raises ¥830M to commercialise waste-heat power tech

What's the deal? Japanese startup elleThermoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised a total of ¥830 million (roughly $5.2 million) in an early-stage round, with Keio Innovation Initiative (KII)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → leading alongside other investors. The company is commercialising Semiconductor-Sensitized Thermal Cell (STC) technology developed at the Institute of Science TokyoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

What's the endgame? STC generates electricity from low-grade heat found at around room temperature, adapting the mechanism of dye-sensitised solar cells by swapping "light excitation" of the dye for "thermal excitation" of a semiconductor. elleThermo aims to build a technology that produces power stably 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather.

What's the money for? The company will boost STC output and pursue modularisation, build a pilot production line, and strengthen its team. It also plans joint development with data-centre operators to accelerate real-world deployment.

Why now? Since its last raise, elleThermo has established core techniques for larger, layered, and thinner cells and reached milliwatt-level generation. The new capital targets the next step: scaling toward a 200W-class panel built from four roughly 60cm-square panels.

The signal: At ¥830 million, the round sits in the top 10% by size among all early-stage VC deals recorded in Japan, a notable vote of confidence in a pre-revenue deep-tech bet. Founded in February 2023 to turn a university invention into a "baseload" renewable source, elleThermo reflects growing investor appetite for energy technologies tied to rising data-centre power demand.
