The Enschede-based company, a University of Twente spin-off, builds facial recognition software for access control.

What does 20Face do? It develops its facial recognition algorithms entirely in-house in the Netherlands, avoiding technology from providers based in China or the United States. Its products, 20faceXS and 20faceSDK, are used across offices, logistics, healthcare, leisure, and high-security sites.

Why now? The investment announced on 17 August 2026 is aimed at commercialization. 20Face said the money will build out its go-to-market capabilities and push its technology into new markets and sectors, within and beyond the Netherlands.

The privacy angle: 20Face does not store photos. It converts a face into an encrypted vector that cannot be traced back to the original image, and users can grant or revoke permission at any time. The company says this keeps its software GDPR-compliant and biometric data under the customer's control rather than routed through a third party.

"Facial recognition technology developed entirely in the Netherlands that never requires customers to hand over raw biometric data to a third party is a real differentiator," said Wim Smit, partner at 819 Capital Partners.

What's the endgame? The backing positions 20Face to develop its differentiators and scale its commercial footprint. "With their network and experience in scaling start-ups and scale-ups, we are eager to take the next steps," said Frank ter Kuile, chief executive officer of 20Face.

819 Evergreen Fund is an open-ended fund financing deep-tech companies that turn breakthrough research into market-ready technology.

The signal: Investor interest in European biometric technology is increasingly tied to data sovereignty and privacy. By keeping both its algorithms and its data model on home soil, 20Face is betting that "developed in the Netherlands" and privacy-by-design are commercial advantages, not just compliance boxes.
