What's the endgame? Grounded builds the modular workspace or living space on top of a vehicle's chassis — the design, materials, power system, and its Grounded+ software. As Shapiro put it: "The application layer on top of the vehicle is our product."

Why now? The startup, founded in 2022, has pivoted repeatedly. It began customizing electric vans like Ford's E-TransitDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and GM's BrightDropDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for the "van life" set, then targeted small businesses. GM discontinued BrightDrop last year and Ford scrapped its next-generation electric Transit, pushing Grounded toward gas-powered models like Ford's combustion Transit and Mercedes-Benz's SprinterDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

Where's the money going? Grounded has opened a 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Detroit to scale its modular design into a vehicle-agnostic platform. Production starts this month, with capacity ramping up next year.

The company already serves commercial customers including ColgateDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and NokiaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, plus medical clients such as Wayne State University MedicalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Chief product officer Nadia Meyer said Grounded is seeing "notable growth" from food and beverage and public safety customers.

The signal: The round lands in the 95th percentile by size among US seed rounds for connected devices, based on 700 comparable deals. As EVs became a harder sell in the US, Grounded's bet is that the value sits in the software and modular fit-out — not the chassis underneath.
