What each side brings: 1881 Group is a leading provider of digital presence and directory services in Norway, with more than 140 years of history, roughly 23,000 B2B subscribers and around 170,000 paying app subscribers. Fonecta is the leading provider of digital presence and marketing services for businesses in the Nordics, operating Fonecta in Finland and Hitta.se in Sweden.
What's the endgame? The deal extends Fonecta's footprint into Norway, creating a Nordic presence across Finland, Norway and Sweden. It strengthens the foundation for Nordic Connect, Fonecta's unified B2B digital presence platform that helps businesses stay visible across Google, maps, AI-search and more than 40 other digital platforms.
Why now? Consumer search behaviour is shifting quickly, and businesses need visibility across more channels. "The way consumers search for information is changing rapidly," said 1881 Group chief executive officer Asgeir Ohr, adding that combining the brands creates "a stronger platform for both consumers and businesses across the Nordics."
A long-held stake: Kistefos first invested in 1881 in 2007, an investment that paid dividends for 20 consecutive years. "We are proud of what we have achieved as owners and we hope that 1881 will continue its success under the new owner," said Gunnar Jacobsen, investment director at Kistefos and chairman of 1881 Group.
The signal: Fonecta framed the acquisition as "a transformational step," pointing to a highly complementary business and similar model. As search fragments across maps, apps and AI-driven interfaces, regional directory and digital-presence players are consolidating to gain scale, shared technology and a unified Nordic operating model.
