Edgify raises $9M to run AI inside store checkouts and cameras

Try Dealroom → has raised a $9 million Series A extension to expand its platform for running AI directly on hardware already inside retail stores and industrial sites. Rank VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Mangrove Capital Partners backed the round, which brings total funding since Edgify's 2019 launch to $25 million.
What does it do? Edgify runs machine-learning models on retailers' existing equipment — self-checkouts, cameras, weighing scales and point-of-sale systems — rather than sending data to the cloud. It turns that hardware into what the company calls a distributed AI network, handling both inference and model training at the edge.
Why now? As AI costs fall and open-weight models proliferate, running small models locally is getting cheaper and more viable. Keeping data on-site cuts latency and cloud bills while sensitive customer data stays in the store.
What's the endgame? Edgify argues retailers shouldn't need new servers or costly cloud infrastructure for advanced computer vision. "The ability to do AI in a really low-cost manner, on-device, where you don't have to go to data centres or buy servers, makes so much more sense," chief operating officer Mitchell Goldman told Pathfounders.
The company pools compute across devices, accounting for their location, bandwidth, power and thermal limits. "Whether it's a self-service scale where you put your bananas or tomatoes, all the way through to a self-checkout, those systems already have a lot of compute inside them," Goldman said.
First use case: Edgify is targeting shrinkage — shoppers checking out expensive items as cheaper ones. Its computer-vision systems are already deployed by grocery retailers in the US and Europe to recognise produce and detect scan avoidance, product switching and items leaving stores unscanned.

The signal: The raise underscores growing momentum behind "edge" AI, where tiny models run on local devices instead of in data centres. In an era of millions of GPUs powering frontier models, Edgify is betting on the untapped compute already sitting inside everyday store equipment.
