AGI makes first acquisition, buying Baltimore's Heller-Kowitz

Who's involved? Heller-Kowitz, founded in 2014 by principals Steve Heller and Brian Kowitz, offers personal lines, commercial lines, employee benefits, and life insurance. What's the endgame? This is AGI's first acquisition as it builds a network of operator-led agencies across the US, starting in the Mid-Atlantic. Why now? "We believe the future of insurance will be built by combining great operators with great technology," said Brian Morgan, chief executive officer of AGI. He added that "the real value is becoming an AI-native company, not just using AI point solutions."
Why AGI? Kowitz said the agency had received interest from many acquirers over the years, but "their proposals were largely the same." He said AGI's approach stood apart, pairing operational excellence with AI-driven technology while keeping client relationships central.
The signal: AGI's model reflects a broader consolidation push in insurance distribution, where backers seek to raise agency productivity and profitability without erasing the local, relationship-driven presence that Main Street agencies are built on. AGI's team pairs insurance-distribution veterans with engineers who have built Shopify, Flexport, and Opendoor.
