Google's top AI minds exit to build Discovery Loop — with Alphabet's backing

What's the deal? Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist and one of its most consequential technical leaders, is leaving the company to become chief executive of Discovery LoopDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Oriol Vinyals — four senior researchers whose work helped shape Google's infrastructure and modern AI efforts.

What are they building? Discovery Loop is pursuing recursive self-improvement: AI systems that can improve their own capabilities with little or no human intervention. The founders say the same approach could automate more of the experimental loop behind scientific progress, helping researchers design hardware, discover medicines, develop new materials and accelerate other forms of discovery.

Who's backing it? The startup has raised seed funding from Radical VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Khosla Ventures, Alphabet and other Silicon Valley investors. The amount has not been disclosed.

Alphabet's role. The parent company is not only an investor: it has also agreed to provide Discovery Loop with computing power for at least the next year. That arrangement gives the new company access to a resource that is increasingly decisive in frontier AI, while allowing Alphabet to maintain a relationship with the researchers after their departure.

Why leave Google? The founders said the independent structure would give them greater freedom and extreme focus. Their move follows a period in which Google's AI research organisation was reshaped and several prominent researchers left for startups. Dean and Vinyals had helped oversee the design of the company's chatbot technologies, while Le's research helped inspire the technology behind today's AI assistants. Dean also noted that Google's infrastructure was built for large-scale consumer applications, ads and search, with "very different requirements than the type of infrastructure we want to build" — a signal that Discovery Loop intends to design its own compute stack rather than rely on Google's TPU-based systems.

Why it matters. Dean joined Google in 1999 and helped build systems that allowed its search engine to serve billions of queries reliably. He and Ghemawat are the only Google employees to have received the company's highest technical distinction, senior fellow. Their decision to leave makes Discovery Loop one of the most closely watched new AI startups, particularly as well-known researchers continue to choose smaller companies over large labs.

The structure. Discovery Loop will operate as a public benefit corporation, a for-profit structure that allows it to weigh public and social goals alongside financial returns. Dean said the company wants scientific discoveries to be distributed broadly and may make choices that are not strictly in its financial interest.

The signal. This is both a high-profile talent departure and an unusual continuity play: Alphabet is losing four senior researchers while backing their new company and supplying its compute. Discovery Loop's thesis places recursive self-improvement and AI-enabled science at the centre of the next research race.
