Discovery Loop

Discovery Loop is a public benefit corporation founded on August 5, 2026, by a team of distinguished artificial intelligence experts from Google. The founders include Jeff Dean, Google's former chief scientist; Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google Senior Fellow; Oriol Vinyals, former VP of research at Google DeepMind; and Quoc Le, a co-founder of the Google Brain lab. These long-time collaborators, with a history of working together for between 14 and 30 years on foundational computing infrastructure and AI models, departed Google to establish this new venture. The company's central mission is to automate the full experimental loop of the scientific method. It aims to build advanced AI systems capable of independently proposing experiments, implementing them, evaluating the results, and iterating on the findings. This approach is designed to run thousands of research cycles in parallel, operating at a scale and speed that human-led efforts cannot achieve. The ultimate goal is to accelerate breakthroughs in science and engineering by having AI act as a researcher, rather than just a tool for human researchers. Discovery Loop was launched with significant backing, including from Google as a founding investor and cloud partner, and venture capital firms such as those led by Vinod Khosla and Radical Ventures. The company's initial focus will be on applying its methodology to machine learning research itself, with plans to expand into other complex domains like drug discovery, materials science, biology, and chip design.
