Rheinbahn secures €100M loan from KfW IPEX-Bank for Düsseldorf transit
Rheinbahn, the public transport operator in Düsseldorf, has secured a €100 million loan from KfW IPEX-Bank. The debt finances investments in local public transport infrastructure across the city.
Düsseldorf is one of Germany's growing cities, with high commuter density and heavy business traffic. A strong transit network is seen as a key lever to reduce car use and local emissions of CO2, nitrogen oxides, and fine particulates.
Rheinbahn plans to use the funds to expand and modernise its network. "Das Darlehen der KfW IPEX-Bank erweitert unseren Handlungsspielraum für wichtige Investitionen," said Annette Grabbe, a Rheinbahn board member, adding it creates a basis to develop and future-proof local transport.
KfW IPEX-Bank handles export and project finance within the KfW banking group. "Wir freuen uns sehr, erneut unseren langjährigen Kunden Rheinbahn unterstützen zu können," said Aida Welker, a member of its management, noting that financing municipal transport operators strengthens Germany's transport transition. The reference to backing Rheinbahn "again" marks a step up in the bank's ongoing relationship with the operator.
The loan reflects KfW IPEX-Bank's steady push into infrastructure and climate-linked projects, from battery storage portfolios to municipal transit. For Germany's transport transition, patient debt for city operators like Rheinbahn is becoming a core financing route.
