Fundraise

Constellation backs Blue Energy months after $380M raise for shipyard-built reactors

What's the deal? Blue Energy, a developer of prefabricated nuclear power plants, has secured a strategic equity investment from Constellation Technology VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the venture arm of Constellation. It marks the first investment by the fund in a US nuclear developer advancing small modular reactors.

Why now? The deal follows quickly on the heels of Blue Energy's earlier 2026 fundraise of $380 million, which came alongside a partnership with GE VernovaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to build a multi-gigawatt gas-to-nuclear project. The rapid re-raise signals mounting investor conviction in the company as US power demand climbs.

What's the endgame? Blue Energy aims to make new nuclear development project-financeable for the first time. It plans to do so by pairing proven reactor technology — GE Vernova Hitachi's BWRX-300 — with large-format robotic prefabrication borrowed from offshore oil, gas, and LNG projects.

Constellation is the largest US producer of clean energy and operates the country's biggest fleet of nuclear plants. The investment supports Blue Energy's deployment of the BWRX-300, which Constellation calls "a proven technology with a potential path to scale."

Why it matters: "With demand for near-term power rising, Constellation's investment will help Blue Energy meet America's need by making new nuclear development predictable, rapidly scalable, and project financeable for the first time in history," said Jake Jurewicz, Blue Energy chief executive officer and co-founder.

What could go wrong? Blue Energy targets delivery of reliable power in 48 months or less through a phased gas-to-nuclear strategy — an ambitious timeline for an industry known for delays. The company could begin early site works on its first planned project in Texas in 2026, ahead of a final investment decision in 2027.

The signal: Founded in 2023 and spun out of MIT's Nuclear Science and Engineering Department, Blue Energy reflects a broader push to close nuclear's financing gap as data centres and electrification strain the grid. An operator like Constellation lending capital — and credibility — suggests the sector is betting the next reactors get built with balance sheets, not just breakthroughs.
