Skybound Medtech raises $1.25M seed for space-medicine devices
Skybound Medtech, a Houston startup building medical devices to counter bone loss and muscle atrophy in space, closed a $1.25 million seed round in July 2026. The investors were not disclosed. Founded in 2025, the company employs between two and 10 people at Houston's Texas Medical Center.
Skybound is developing dual-use devices — tools that serve both civilian and military buyers. Its pitch: technology that keeps bodies durable in microgravity can also apply to defence and terrestrial healthcare.
Astronauts lose roughly 1% to 1.5% of bone density monthly from weight-bearing bones, according to NASA. That problem grows more acute the longer and farther humans travel from low Earth orbit — a key obstacle to Mars missions.
Founder and chief executive officer Matthew T. Kuhn previously launched medtech venture Taurus Vascular. "If technology can make the body more durable… in space, then those same technologies matter far beyond orbit," Kuhn wrote on the company's site.
Skybound has disclosed two programs. Project Caduceus is a "neuroendocrine stimulation platform" aimed at blocking muscle atrophy and bone loss in microgravity or austere environments. Project Sentinel, to be presented in September 2026 at the Defense TechConnect event in National Harbor, Maryland, focuses on trauma care in contested areas.
The company was a finalist in TechConnect's Bio in Space Innovation Challenge and appears in Capital Factory's portfolio — two signs of traction within Texas's innovation ecosystem.
An April 2026 profile in the Houston Business Journal reported that Kuhn was seeking $25 million to build Skybound as a venture studio spinning up multiple space-medicine companies. How that ambition relates to the $1.25 million seed remains unexplained.
The space economy is expanding, with McKinsey and the World Economic Forum projecting a $1.8 trillion market by 2035. Skybound's dual-use bet ties that momentum to steady defence demand, hedging a nascent orbital market against terrestrial and military buyers.
