Korea's Exim Bank raises $2B in bonds, fast-tracked for AI and chips
What's the deal? The Export-Import Bank of KoreaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (Exim Bank) has raised $2 billion by selling bonds overseas, the state-run lender said on July 14. The sale came in two tranches: $1 billion in three-year fixed-rate bonds and $1 billion in five-year fixed-rate debt.
Why now? Exim Bank had planned to float the debt in September but advanced the offering. The goal: fund key industrial policies for the artificial intelligence, semiconductor, and bio sectors.
What's the endgame? The $2 billion sale is one slice of a larger plan. Exim Bank is seeking to raise $17 billion this year by borrowing and selling debt overseas.
The signal: At $2 billion, this ranks in the 99th percentile of debt rounds tracked in South Korea's fintech sector — among the largest on record. The move signals how much capital Seoul is willing to channel toward the industries it sees as strategic.
