Space Tech Accelerator raises ¥200M seed to bring satellite data to palm oil sourcing
What's the deal? Japan's Space Tech Accelerator (STA) has raised ¥200 million (about $1.2 million) in a seed round via a third-party share allotment. Frontier InnovationsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → 1 Investment Limited Partnership, run by Tokyo-based Frontier Innovations, led the round as lead investor.
What's the endgame? STA, led by chief executive officer Genki Hiraga, builds businesses around satellite data. Its current focus is using that data to support sustainable palm oil sourcing.
Why now? Companies increasingly face pressure to manage supply chains for more than price and quality — extending to deforestation, human rights, environmental impact, and effects on local communities. Palm oil is a case in point: a key raw material across food, household goods, and chemicals, but one where land-use change and traceability, including for smallholder farmers, remain major challenges.
What could go wrong? Satellite analysis alone cannot solve the problem. STA plans to work with local firms, farmers, and government agencies to turn the data into systems that businesses can actually use.
The signal: Frontier Innovations said it backed STA for its execution and its aim to move satellite data from analysis into real-world deployment. The firm plans hands-on support to help STA become "a global success case" in satellite data use.
