Gataca raises fresh capital to scale digital identity verification

What's the deal? Spain's GatacaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised fresh capital from new and existing investors to expand its digital identity verification business. Signature VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → led the round, with new backer Wolver Ventures also participating. The company has not disclosed the size of the round.

What does it do? Gataca builds digital identity wallets, where users store identity documents on their phone once issued by a trusted source. It processed more than 750,000 wallet transactions in 2025 and has been involved in rollouts across eight countries.

Why now? Generative AI has made forged documents, synthetic identities, and deepfakes harder to catch with traditional methods. Gataca points to identity fraud as a key driver of demand, flagging iGaming as an especially pressured sector.

At Spain's Bet On Ceuta industry event, identity theft cases reportedly rose 12% year on year. A regulator quoted by the company said a photo and a selfie "are no longer enough" as a verification method.

Regulation is tightening. Gataca cites the EU's eIDAS 2.0 regulation, mandatory by the end of 2027, plus the spread of age verification laws across Europe, the US, and Australia. It says these deadlines are hitting multiple industries at once, pushing companies toward more secure solutions.

What's the endgame? The capital will fund growth in finance, iGaming, and media, and further develop Gataca's platform. That includes an intelligence layer for fraud detection and broader interoperability between different identity wallets.

The signal: Identity verification is shifting from a compliance chore to a business-critical function. With more than 20 countries building national digital identity strategies around the wallet model, Gataca is betting the infrastructure layer becomes as routine as a payment card in Apple or Google Wallet.
