The debt is structured as a Green Loan, with a first €200 million tranche signed on July 1, 2026.
Where the money goes: The financing will refurbish hydropower plants, upgrade electricity distribution networks, build electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and expand district heating. Alperia said the deal supports its industrial plan.
What's the endgame? The hydropower investments will renew plants producing more than 3,000GWh of electricity — enough to power around 1.16 million Italian households. The programme will also fund roughly 400 EV charging stations and connect more than 200 buildings to district heating.
Why it matters: The deal ranks among the largest of its kind, sitting in the 94th percentile of all-time debt rounds in its sector and country. It reflects the EIB's push to finance integrated regional transitions rather than single assets.
By the numbers: The EIB Group signed €100 billion in new financing across more than 870 projects in 2025. In Italy alone, it signed 105 agreements totalling €12.3 billion that year.
What they're saying: "This financing supports a comprehensive programme that strengthens strategic infrastructure and makes a tangible contribution to the energy transition," said Jean-Christophe Laloux, EIB director general and head of EU lending and advisory. Alperia chief executive officer Luis Amort called the support "of strategic importance for the implementation of our industrial plan."
The signal: The facility fits a broader acceleration of EU-backed funding for renewable generation and grid upgrades across Italy and Europe, from a €153 million Sicilian solar project to a €500 million EniDealroom has a profile for this one.
