Fundraise

Menlo Ventures closes $3B — its largest-ever raise — to go all-in on AI

What's the deal? Menlo Ventures has closed $3B in fresh capital — the largest fundraise in its 50-year history — split across two AI-focused funds: Menlo Ventures XVII for seed-to-Series A bets and Menlo Inflection IV for growth-stage cheques.

Why it matters: The raise is underwritten by one extraordinary bet. Menlo's stake in Anthropic — built up with an additional ~$500M invested across several rounds — is now worth close to $14B, according to Bloomberg. That single position dwarfs the new fund and gives Menlo the credibility (and paper returns) to go all-in on AI.

Menlo first backed Anthropic in 2023, when the Claude maker was pre-product and pre-revenue, then led its Series D with the largest cheque in the firm's history and has invested in every round since. Anthropic has since raised tens of billions and sits among the most valuable private companies in the world.

The strategy: Rather than spinning up a separate AI vehicle, Menlo has made AI the thesis across both new funds — investing at every stage from frontier-model infrastructure to enterprise, healthcare, and consumer applications.

What could go wrong? Concentration cuts both ways: a huge share of Menlo's recent fortunes rides on Anthropic's continued ascent. AI valuations are stretched, and it remains unclear how many AI-native startups can build durable businesses as foundation-model providers expand into the application layer.
