British Business Bank increases Allica Bank's Tier 2 capital facility to £45M

What's the deal? The British Business Bank has increased its Tier 2 capital facility for Allica Bank by £15M, bringing the total to £45M. The expanded facility builds on a £30M agreement struck in 2022 and is expected to unlock up to £150M of additional lending to UK small businesses.

Allica Bank focuses exclusively on established SMEs with five to 250 employees. Since gaining its banking licence in 2019, it has lent more than £4B to over 25,000 businesses and holds more than £5B in deposits.

Why now? Allica is coming off a landmark year. Earlier in 2026, it was valued at close to $1.2B following a Series D round, cementing its status as one of the UK's fastest-growing fintech lenders. The bank's rapid growth gave the British Business Bank confidence to deepen the partnership.

Richard Bowen, managing director of direct financial institution solutions at the British Business Bank, said Allica "has grown substantially since our last Tier 2 capital transaction in 2022" and called it an important delivery partner for the bank's economic growth mission.

What could go wrong? Tier 2 capital facilities are subordinated debt — meaning the British Business Bank sits behind senior creditors if things go south. A downturn in UK SME lending quality could put that capital at risk. And while Allica's growth has been impressive, scaling fast in business lending has historically tripped up challenger banks when credit cycles turn.

The signal: Allica Bank's trajectory from banking licence in 2019 to late-growth stage and a near-$1.2B valuation in just seven years underscores how quickly fintech challengers can scale in underserved lending markets. The British Business Bank's decision to deepen its Tier 2 commitment — rather than simply renew it — suggests the state-backed fund sees established-SME lending as a reliable channel for policy-driven capital deployment, particularly as traditional lenders continue to leave an estimated £65B funding gap in that segment.
