Stepful raises $55M Series C to scale AI-powered healthcare workforce training

What's the deal? Stepful, an AI-powered training platform for healthcare workers, has raised $55M in Series C funding led by Oak HC/FTDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The company has graduated more than 32,000 healthcare workers since its founding. It offers employer-sponsored, debt-free pathways that let workers go from a high school diploma to a six-figure healthcare career without leaving the workforce or taking on student loans.

Why now? The US healthcare system spends $97B annually on contract staffing, largely because the credentialing and training pipeline was never built to scale. Legacy trade schools operate under enrolment caps and manual workflows that can't keep pace with demand.

Stepful says it has signed more than 35 major healthcare system clients, including Mount Sinai, Ochsner, and ProvidenceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The new funding will go toward expanding partnerships, launching degree programmes in nursing, respiratory therapy, and imaging, and accelerating its AI capabilities.

"Stepful is the only company we have seen that combines online education with a sophisticated AI engine to solve the talent supply problem at scale," said Vig Chandramouli, partner at Oak HC/FT.

What could go wrong? Scaling clinical education is harder than scaling a typical software product. Healthcare training requires hands-on clinical placements, regulatory approvals, and accreditation — all of which vary by state and speciality. Moving into higher-acuity programmes like nursing and imaging will test whether the platform can maintain quality at speed.

The company also faces the challenge of proving that AI-trained graduates perform as well as traditionally trained ones, a question that risk-averse hospital systems will scrutinise closely.

The signal: Dealroom classifies Stepful as a "breakout" company, and this Series C — backed by healthcare-specialist fund Oak HC/FT alongside a mix of impact-oriented and life-sciences investors like Foresite Capital and the Citi Impact Fund — suggests the workforce-as-infrastructure thesis is gaining cross-sector conviction. With 32,000 graduates and 35-plus health system clients already in place, the bet is that vertically integrated training platforms can capture value that legacy trade schools and staffing agencies have long split between them.
