Visium SA closes first institutional round with Columbus Venture Partners and Concentric

What's the deal? Visium SA, a Swiss AI and data consultancy for highly regulated industries, has closed its first institutional funding round. Columbus Venture Partners and Concentric co-led the deal, with angel participation from founders behind Hugging Face, QuantumBlack, Silo AI, and Frontier Car Group. The company did not disclose the amount raised.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Lausanne, Visium has grown fully bootstrapped to 100 AI experts across Europe. It has delivered more than 250 AI and data solutions for clients including Roche, Novartis, and DSM-Firmenich.

Why now? Visium is using the capital to expand across Europe and the US, scaling its team and product capabilities. The company has been recognised as one of the Financial Times' top 100 fastest-growing companies in Europe — a signal that its bootstrapped model has hit a ceiling it now needs institutional backing to break through.

Demand for AI solutions in regulated sectors like life sciences and specialty chemicals is surging, but these industries require domain expertise and compliance-aware engineering that generic AI tools can't easily deliver. That gap is Visium's core pitch.

What could go wrong? The AI services market is increasingly crowded, with both Big Four consultancies and pure-play AI firms competing for the same enterprise contracts. Scaling a consulting-plus-product model internationally is notoriously difficult — maintaining quality while growing headcount across geographies is a persistent challenge.

Not disclosing the funding amount also raises questions about the round's size relative to Visium's ambitions in the US market, where competition and costs are significantly higher.

The signal: Visium's move from bootstrapped consultancy to institutionally backed AI firm mirrors a wider investor shift toward vertical AI plays in regulated sectors, where compliance barriers and domain complexity create natural moats against horizontal competitors. The involvement of Concentric — a corporate investor known for its activist approach to scaling software-driven businesses — suggests the focus will be on accelerating Visium's product portfolio alongside its consulting arm, a dual model that investors increasingly favour for its blend of recurring revenue potential and real-world feedback loops.
