QuberTech raises £3.4M to grow natural rubber from engineered dandelions

What's the deal? QuberTech, a UK biotech startup, has raised £3.4M from UKI2S and Sustainable Ventures to develop engineered dandelions that produce natural rubber and other bio-based materials. The company uses advanced biotechnology to cultivate high-yield dandelion strains in controlled growing environments, offering a localised alternative to imported rubber supply chains.

Unlike rubber trees, which take years to mature and grow only in tropical regions, dandelions can be cultivated rapidly in scalable systems closer to industrial demand centres. The platform also generates compounds for use in food, cosmetics, sustainable packaging, and advanced biomaterials.

Why now? Global natural rubber supply chains are under mounting pressure from climate change, disease, geopolitical disruption, and tightening environmental regulation. Rubber is critical across automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, and defence industries — yet production remains concentrated in tropical regions vulnerable to all of those risks.

QuberTech has also received support through Defra's Farming Innovation Programme, delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, which backs precision breeding approaches for more resilient industrial supply chains.

What could go wrong? The company is still at an early stage. It plans to use the funding to accelerate R&D, expand its team, and validate the platform at small pilot scale — meaning commercial deployment is still some way off. Scaling engineered biology from lab to industrial production is notoriously difficult, and the economics of dandelion-derived rubber will need to compete with established supply chains that, despite their fragility, remain cheap.

The signal: This deal sits at the intersection of two powerful trends: the push to secure critical material supply chains and the growing maturity of engineering biology as a platform technology. As governments and industries look to reduce dependence on concentrated, vulnerable sourcing — whether for semiconductors, rare earths, or rubber — biotech solutions that enable local production are attracting serious attention. QuberTech's approach, if it scales, could offer a template for how synthetic biology reshapes industrial materials more broadly.
