Texture raises $12.5M to help utility co-ops modernise grid management
What's the deal? Texture, a New York-based grid software startup, has raised $12.5 million in Series A funding to expand its platform that gives utilities a unified view of every device and data source on their network. The round was co-led by VoLo Earth Ventures and Equal Ventures, with participation from Lerer Hippeau and Abstract Ventures.
The platform connects to systems including smart meters, batteries, EVs, solar infrastructure, and smart thermostats — consolidating everything into a single operational layer without requiring utilities to rip out existing tech.
Why now? Power grids are under mounting strain from data centres, electric vehicles, distributed generation, utility-scale renewables, and extreme weather. Utility cooperatives, which serve about 42 million Americans, are feeling this pressure acutely — often with smaller budgets and fewer staff than investor-owned utilities.
"A co-op serving 15,000 members shouldn't have to build custom technology to launch a battery program or manage transformer load," said founder Sanjiv Sanghavi.
Texture says its platform can get utilities operational within days by plugging into existing systems. It has built first-party integrations with more than 50 hardware manufacturers, including Tesla, Honeywell, and SolarEdge. The company also announced a partnership with NRTC, whose network spans roughly 850 utility cooperatives nationwide, to offer distributed energy resource management capabilities.
What could go wrong? Utility cooperatives are famously cautious adopters of new technology. Scaling across hundreds of co-ops — each with its own systems, governance, and priorities — is a major operational challenge. And while Texture touts rapid deployment, integrating dozens of hardware vendors and legacy systems reliably at scale remains unproven.
The signal: Equal Ventures and VoLo Earth Ventures co-leading this round underscores growing investor appetite for the software infrastructure layer sitting between ageing grid hardware and the rapid proliferation of distributed energy resources. Texture's partnership with NRTC — a mature cooperative network spanning roughly 850 utilities — gives the early-growth startup a rare built-in distribution channel, potentially compressing the long sales cycles that typically slow enterprise software adoption in the utility sector.
