Pollen raises €3.2M to build universal battery-swap network for electric mopeds
What's the deal? Pollen, a Lisbon-based startup founded by former Uber Portugal general manager Rui Bento, has raised €3.2M in seed funding to build a universal battery-swapping network for mopeds and motorcycles across Europe. The round was co-led by climate-focused VC Pale Blue Dot.
The company aims to create an open, brand-agnostic infrastructure that lets riders of electric two-wheelers swap depleted batteries for charged ones at stations throughout cities — eliminating the need to wait for a charge.
Why now? Electric mopeds and motorcycles are gaining traction in European cities as urban mobility shifts away from combustion engines. But charging infrastructure remains a bottleneck — most riders lack access to home charging, and waiting times make electric two-wheelers impractical for delivery workers and commuters who need constant uptime.
Battery swapping solves this by reducing "refuelling" to seconds rather than hours. The model has already proven itself in Asian markets like Taiwan, where Gogoro built a massive swap network. Europe is now ripe for a similar approach.
What could go wrong? Building a universal standard is notoriously difficult. Pollen needs buy-in from multiple vehicle manufacturers to adopt compatible battery formats — and OEMs have historically preferred proprietary systems. Without sufficient network density, the service loses its convenience advantage, creating a classic chicken-and-egg problem between riders and station coverage.
The capital requirements for physical infrastructure are also steep. At €3.2M, Pollen will need to prove unit economics quickly to attract the larger rounds necessary for meaningful scale.
The signal: This raise reflects growing investor appetite for the "picks and shovels" layer of urban electrification — the infrastructure that makes EVs usable rather than the vehicles themselves. Pale Blue Dot's involvement underscores that climate VCs see battery swapping as a high-leverage decarbonisation play.
It also signals that Europe's two-wheeler electrification wave may follow Asia's playbook, where swap networks became the dominant charging model. If Pollen can establish itself as the standard, it could become essential infrastructure for the continent's last-mile delivery and urban transport sectors.
