Portugal's Savearth raises €400K to cut hotel water waste with AI
What's the deal? SavearthDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Portuguese startup using AI to reduce water waste in hotels, has closed a €400,000 funding round from 10 investors. Backers include Laika Ventures, Pierre Santos (chief executive of Host PMS), and Daniel Johnson (former chief executive of Venza).
The capital will go toward hiring, product development, and expansion across Portugal and Spain.
Why now? Excessive hot water use in hotel showers is one of hospitality's biggest hidden costs — estimated at more than $7B per year globally. The average guest uses around 120 litres of hot water per shower, driving up both bills and environmental impact.
Hotels face growing pressure to hit ESG targets without degrading the guest experience. Savearth says a 200-room hotel could save between €60,000 and €80,000 a year using its technology.
The startup's system measures water consumption in real time by analysing shower sound with AI. It then nudges guests toward shorter "eco showers" through a smart interface and incentive mechanics.
"This investment validates what we're building and the urgency of the problem we're tackling," said João Machado, Savearth's chief executive. "Hospitality needs solutions that reduce waste, improve efficiency, and support ESG goals — without compromising the guest experience."
What could go wrong? Behaviour-nudging tech in private spaces like bathrooms can feel intrusive if poorly executed. Savearth will also need to prove its ROI claims hold up across different hotel types and climates as it scales beyond its home market.
Competition is another factor. Water management is attracting more attention from both startups and established building-tech companies, so Savearth's window to establish a foothold in Iberia may be narrow.
The signal: Savearth sits at the intersection of two accelerating trends: AI-driven building efficiency and hospitality's mounting ESG obligations. Classified as an early-growth company on Dealroom, it is betting that a narrow, high-ROI wedge — shower water in hotels — can open the door to broader resource-management plays across Iberia and beyond.
