Resurrect Bio tops up Series A to $10.3M for AI-driven crop defence

Spun out of The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich in December 2021, Resurrect Bio has built a platform called FloraFold AI that predicts how pathogen proteins bind with immune receptors in plants. By pinpointing those interactions, it can recommend precise gene edits for seed company partners to make — effectively locking pathogens out and letting plants defend themselves without chemical inputs.

The funds will go toward growing the team and developing disease resistance traits in economically important crops.

Why now? Crop pathogens are evolving faster than traditional breeding can keep up, while regulatory and consumer pressure to reduce chemical crop protection is mounting. Resurrect Bio recently struck a joint development agreement with lead investor Corteva, one of the world's largest agricultural companies, signalling commercial validation of the approach.

Unlike many plant breeding efforts that target a single crop or trait, Resurrect Bio says its technology is foundational — applicable across multiple crops and effective against fungi, oomycetes, and nematodes simultaneously. "What makes Resurrect Bio unusual is that we can work with any crop, most pathogens, and many pests," head of operations Robert Lo Bue told AgFunderNews.

What could go wrong? The science is complex. Plants have multiple immune receptor proteins, while pathogens may deploy hundreds of effector proteins, creating thousands of possible molecular interactions. Scaling that discovery process across many crops and geographies will test both the AI platform and the team's capacity.

Gene-edited crops also face an uneven regulatory landscape. While some markets treat gene edits differently from transgenic modifications, others remain restrictive, which could limit the commercial reach of Resurrect Bio's traits.

The signal: Corteva's dual role as lead investor and development partner reflects a broader pattern of agricultural corporates moving beyond passive venture bets to actively co-develop with AI-native startups. The syndicate itself — spanning impact-oriented funds like Pymwymic, deep-tech specialist SynBioVen, and growth investor Future Planet Capital — suggests that Resurrect Bio's cross-crop, multi-pathogen platform is drawing interest from across the capital spectrum, not just traditional agtech backers.
