Hulic backs Japanese English-language education startup J PREP

What's the deal? Hulic StartupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the corporate venture capital arm of Japanese real estate giant Hulic Corporation, has invested in J PREPDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Tokyo-based English-language school for primary and secondary students. The investment was made through Hulic Startup's Fund No. 2. Financial terms were not disclosed.

J PREP, founded in 2013, runs English cram schools designed to prepare Japanese students for top global universities. It uses a hybrid teaching model that pairs native English-speaking instructors with native Japanese-speaking instructors, focusing on five core skills: speaking, writing, reading, listening, and thinking in English.

Why now? Hulic Group has been expanding its children's education business. It already owns Riso Education Group, a major Japanese tutoring company, and sees J PREP as a natural fit for synergies across the portfolio. The investment signals a deeper push into education as a growth vertical beyond Hulic's core real estate operations.

What could go wrong? Japan's cram school market is mature and competitive, with demographic headwinds from a shrinking youth population. Scaling a premium, instructor-intensive model could also prove challenging if J PREP expands beyond its current base in Tokyo's Shibuya district.

The signal: J PREP sits at the early growth stage, according to Dealroom, suggesting this CVC backing is designed to accelerate a model that has so far remained relatively small-scale. Hulic Startup's decision to deploy capital from its second fund into education — rather than adjacent proptech or real estate services — underscores how Japanese conglomerates are hunting for durable, demographically resilient revenue streams as the country's core property market matures.
