Rehab for JAPAN taps pharma giant's CVC to build exercise support for cancer patients

What's the deal? Tokyo-based startup Rehab for JAPAN has raised funding through a third-party share allocation from Ono Digital Health InvestmentDealroom has a profile for this one. The investment will fund development of a healthcare platform rooted in "exercise oncology" — the use of structured physical activity to support cancer patients and survivors.

Rehab for JAPAN, founded in 2016, develops evidence-based care software called Rehab Cloud for elderly rehabilitation. It will now partner with Ono Pharmaceutical and its subsidiary Michiteku, which provides treatment-life support tools for cancer patients, to explore exercise guidance services for people undergoing chemotherapy or post-treatment observation.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Why now? Japan has roughly 3.5 million cancer survivors, with about one million new diagnoses each year. The five-year survival rate has climbed to 64.1%, turning cancer increasingly into a condition people live with rather than die from. That shift creates urgent demand for services that address the physical decline and quality-of-life challenges that accompany treatment and recovery.

Exercise oncology has gained traction globally as research mounts showing that rehabilitation and physical activity improve outcomes for cancer patients. Yet structured, accessible exercise support remains scarce in Japan's care landscape.

What could go wrong? Rehab for JAPAN's core expertise lies in elderly care, not oncology. Translating its rehab software and data capabilities to a clinically complex patient population will require deep integration with medical professionals and careful validation. Regulatory and reimbursement hurdles in Japan's healthcare system could also slow commercialisation.

Adoption is another risk. Convincing patients mid-treatment to engage with exercise programmes — and convincing oncologists to recommend them — demands significant trust-building and evidence generation.

The signal: Ono Pharmaceutical is a mature pharma company channelling its CVC arm into digital health bets that extend its oncology focus beyond the pill — a pattern increasingly common among large drugmakers seeking to own more of the patient journey. For Rehab for JAPAN, classified as a breakout-stage startup built on elderly rehab, the deal marks a deliberate pivot toward disease-specific care in a market where 3.5 million cancer survivors represent a fast-growing, underserved segment.
